Discovering Kampala, Uganda with Hornbill Treks & Safaris

Trip Overview

In March 2025, I had the incredible opportunity to join a Hornbill Treks & Safaris FAM trip to Uganda.

The journey began in the capitol city of Kampala, then took us trekking primates in Kibale National Forest, safariing through Queen Elizabeth National Park and trekking gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, before returning to Kampala.

The trip was hosted by Hornbill’s warm team, with excellent partner properties and knowledgeable guides. This experience left me eager to book my next safari before I even left!

Things to Do

  • City History

Lake Victoria nestles the city of Kampala. Uganda's capitol is alive with energy, from bustling markets to the boda bodas (motorcycles) zipping through the streets.

Our first stop was Kabaka's Palace, the official residence of the King of Buganda, symbolizing the kingdom’s heritage. Founded in the 14th century, Buganda is one of East Africa’s oldest and most influential kingdoms.

  • Shop, Eat & Stay

Visit Le Petit Village that features Le Petit Hotel with 28 rooms, a pool, gym and spa updated in 2022. There are three restaurants: Le Chateau, La Patisserie and Hanabi Modern Japanese, plus a gelato cart and Le Gourmet Delicatessen, stocked with international products. M-Maison, a home design store, sells many of the handcrafted items featured in the hotel rooms.

  • School Visit

Visit Awegys Secondary School, a local partner supported by Hornbill Treks & Safaris. What started with just four students has now expanded to educate hundreds. The school features classrooms, a library, a science lab, dormitories, a village water well, and a clinic. It also offers sponsorships for local youth in need.

Hornbill’s charitable foundation supports various local partners in the communities where they run safaris and tours.
